"Aum is the best support; this is the highest support. Whosoever knows this support is adored in the world of Brahma." (1.2.15-17) — Katha Upanishad

Aum (also Om, Devanagari) is a mystical or sacred syllable. It is found at the beginning of most Hindu texts as a sacred exclamation to be uttered at the beginning and end of a reading of the Vedas, or before any prayer or mantra.

The syllable Aum is first described as the all-encompassing mystical entity in the Upanishads. Today, in all Hindu art and all over India and Nepal, 'Aum' can be seen virtually everywhere, as a standard sign for Hinduism and its philosophy.

The sages and rishis knew that the cosmos is a mass of vibrating conscious energy, and that it is these vibrations that hold all matter in manifestation. Vibrations are the very stuff of which we and the world are made.

In the ancient Hindu Vedic scriptures we find: "In the beginning was the Word. In the beginning was Brahma, with Whom was Vak (the Word).” In the Bible, Gospel of John 1:12 we also find, "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." What is this word the ancient scriptures write about? They say that it is the sound of creation, and it is ‘Aum'. This universal, timeless sound is the vibration of the limitless ocean of cosmic energy out of which all things manifest.

The Aum sound is the bridge between human consciousness and cosmic consciousness. Through chanting Aum we can bring ourselves into harmony with the entire cosmos. The Aum sound consists of three Sanskrit sounds. The vowel "A" resonates deep in the throat, while the vowel "U" carries the vibration forward into the mouth, and the closed lips articulate the "M" sound. Aum therefore involves all the vocal structures. Because of the large sinus cavities that sit above the mouth, the head acts as a perfect resonating chamber. The hollow sinus spaces act as echo chambers which resonate sound into the brain affecting all the master glands of the body (pineal, pituitary). As the vibration of Aum is carried throughout the head, all our primary organs of perception are also affected (eyes, ears, nose, mouth).

Therefore, as we chant Aum the sound permeates all of our organs of perception, affecting our mind, our intellect, and our nervous system which brings us back into harmony with the creative forces of the universe which is our source. This is why AUM is so healing and has a centering effect on the body.
